Modestly sized, MKVIS packs a punch with astronomy and space-exploration videos, virtual observatory tours and exhibits on the mountain's history, ecology and geology. Budding astronomers of all ages geek out in the gift shop, where knowledgeable staff will help you pass the time acclimatizing to the 9200ft altitude. Check the website for upcoming special events, such as lectures about science and Hawaiian culture, typically held on Saturday nights.
Free public stargazing programs happen from 6pm until 10pm nightly, weather permitting.
Inside the gift shop you can buy hot chocolate, coffee, packets of instant noodles and freeze-dried astronaut food to munch on; hoodies, hats and gloves to stay warm; and books about science and Hawaiian culture.
Across from MKVIS, a 15-minute uphill hike crests Puʻu Kalepeamoa (9394ft), a cinder cone offering glorious sunset views. Directly off the MKVIS parking lot is a small enclosed area where rare and endangered silversword plants grow.
As you drive the 6 miles uphill (gaining 2500ft in altitude) from Saddle Rd to the MKVIS, you'll break through the cloud cover. The road is paved and normally accessible by 2WD vehicles as far as MKVIS.
