Lahaina was a popular stop for whaling ships traveling between Japan and the arctic during the Golden Age of whaling (1825–60). The ships would also re-stock here before the long voyage home to New England. At this small but fascinating museum the hardships and routines of life at sea are revealed in authentic period photographs, ship logs, harpoons and intriguing interpretive plaques that sound the depths of whaling history.
Particularly eye-opening is the life-size whaling ship forecastle. How 20 crewmen could live for weeks in this tiny room – without coming to blows or losing their minds – is a mystery.
Museum hours may extend until 6pm during the winter whale season. A free humpback whale talk is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am; whale talks may also occur on Tuesday and Thursday during whale season. Talks are based on docent availability, so call ahead. A full-size sperm whale skeleton welcomes guests at the front entrance to the shopping center. Parking tickets validated with $6 admission.
