This small section of Hanalei Bay near the Hanalei River mouth usually offers the calmest surf among the wild North Shore swells. Also known as Hanalei Pier for its unmistakable landmark, this stretch of sand shaded by ironwood trees is popular mainly with surfers. In summer, swimming and snorkeling are decent, as is kayaking. Use extreme caution during periods of high surf because dangerous shore breaks and rip currents are common.
The sandy-bottomed beach slopes gently, making it safe for beginning surfers. Lessons are typically taught just west of the pier, where you'll find surf schools galore. At the park's eastern end, where the Hanalei River empties onto the beach, is a small boat ramp where kayakers launch for trips upriver.
Facilities include restrooms and outdoor showers, and there are lifeguards.
