A little over 6 miles south of Bixby Bridge, Point Sur rises like a velvety green fortress out of the sea. It looks like an island, but is actually connected to land by a sandbar. Atop the volcanic rock sits an 1889 stone lightstation, which was staffed until 1974. During three-hour guided tours, ocean views and tales of the lighthouse keepers’ family lives are engrossing. Meet your tour guide at the locked farm gate ¼-mile north of Point Sur Naval Facility.
Special monthly moonlight tours are given between April and October. Call ahead to confirm all tour schedules. Show up early because space is limited (no reservations, some credit cards accepted).
