The small, grassy and enchanting islet is in the middle of the boat harbor and reached by a pedestrian bridge. With totems, tall pines and the half-dozen eagles usually perched in the branches, the island is a quiet oasis in the hum of the fishing fleet around it. Shakes Community House , an excellent example of a high-caste tribal house containing tools, blankets and other cultural items, is open only to accommodate cruise ships (call the Wrangell Museum for times).
Just as impressive are the six totems surrounding the tribal house, all duplicates of originals carved in the late 1930s.
