The gorgeous rainforest jungle along this stretch of the Old Mamalahoa Hwy proves that those annoying showers are worth it. Cruising the narrow road, you cross a series of one-lane bridges spanning little streams and waterfalls, under a tangle of trees, a green yin to the dry yang of the western side of the island. By far the best way to get to Hilo.
Although with that said, while you can begin the drive from either end, approaching from the south (Hilo side) involves an easy right turn between the 7- and 8-mile markers on the main highway.
