The staggering collection spans the Middle Ages to the present. The neoclassical west building showcases European art through the early 1900s; highlights include the Western Hemisphere's only da Vinci painting and a slew of impressionist and postimpressionist works. The IM Pei–designed east building displays modern art, with works by Picasso, Matisse, Pollock and a massive Calder mobile over the entrance lobby. Alas, it's closed (except for the lobby) until 2016 for renovations. A trippy underground walkway connects the two wings.
