A large, landscaped traffic circle with a massive ceremonial arch sits at the intersection of Flatbush Ave and Prospect Park West. This marks the beginning of Eastern Parkway and the entrance to Prospect Park. Formally known as the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, the arch, which was built in the 1890s, is a memorial to Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
The Quadriga , the massive sculpture that rests on top of the archway, depicts Lady Columbia, a representation of the US, accompanied by two winged figures of Victory. On the north end, there is a small bust of John F Kennedy, the city’s only official monument to the late President.
A greenmarket is held here from 8am to 4pm on Saturdays year-round. From May through October, food trucks gather twice monthly (on a Sunday) from 11am to 5pm. Check www.nycfoodtrucks.org for the schedule.
