The most hyped-up attraction in all of south Colorado is this impressive 950ft-deep canyon, which stretches for 10 miles west of Cañon City. A 1260ft-long suspension bridge was built across the gorge in 1929, further promoting the already popular area as a tourist destination. Tragically, the 2013 Cañon City wildfire ravaged the surrounding landscape and destroyed the vast majority of the park attractions, including the visitor center and aerial tram, but miraculously spared the bridge.
The park estimates that the bridge will remain open to traffic, but the rest of the park may stay closed through 2015 while renovations are undertaken. Both raft trips and the Royal Gorge Route Railroad will continue to run through the gorge.
