Part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, this house of culture is the only museum in the country that’s dedicated to both historic and contemporary design. The collection is housed in the 64-room mansion built by billionaire Andrew Carnegie in 1901.The 210,000-piece collection is exquisite, with artful displays spanning 3000 years spread across four floors of the building. An extensive three-year renovation, completed in 2014, brings novelty to its exhibitions with interactive touch screens and wild technology.
There’s also more exhibition space, a problem-solving Process Lab and an eye-popping Immersion Room, where you can project images onto the walls from patterns dating back to the 18th century.
