On the campus of Sul Ross State University, this little museum is a great place to delve into the past, with exhibits on marine fossils (a warm shallow sea covered Big Bend 135 million years ago), Native American pictographs, Spanish missionaries, Mexican pioneers, buffalo soldiers (nickname for the African American soldiers who fought in the Civil War) and of course cowboys (with a full-scale chuck wagon on display).
The multimedia museum is designed for maximum visual appeal, incorporating broad and impressive recreations rather than cases full of relics. Reading is kept to a minimum, but, when called for, the beautifully designed signage draws you right in.
