For more than six decades, the Wilcox Ranch protected the ancient archaeological sites in what is now Range Creek Wildlife Management Area , east of East Carbon (25 miles southeast of Price). Since the family turned the property over to the government, the public has been allowed limited access. The best way to explore is with a full-day 4WD tour ($125 per person) run by Tavaputs Ranch (www.tavaputsranch.com). In addition to various guided trips, the ranch offers lodging. Stay the night in the main house rooms or in cabins ($175 per person including meals) and you also have access to the backcountry hikes, drives and horseback rides on a 15,000-acre spread.
