Hidden on a private family’s estate, the centerpiece of this unique site is a stone-walled agricultural heiau (temple) surrounded by Hawaiian ethnobotanical gardens, which include rare native and Polynesian introduction plants. Take your turn playing konane (a Hawaiian version of checkers), then follow the path downhill to learn how taro was traditionally farmed. Walking tours are led by volunteers and staff eager to share island lore and Hawaiian traditions. Try to call at least a week in advance for tour reservations and to get directions. No walk-ins can be accommodated, to protect both the historic site and the resident family’s privacy.
