In AD 1064 a volcano erupted on this spot, spewing ash across 800 sq miles, spawning the Kana-A lava flow and leaving behind the 8029ft Sunset Crater. The eruption forced farmers to vacate lands they had cultivated for 400 years, and subequent eruptions continued for more than 200 years. A 1-mile trail winds through the blacker than black Bonito lava flow (formed c 1180), and another 1-mile round-trip hike climbs Lenox Crater (7024ft).
More ambitious hikers and mountain bikers can ascend O'Leary Peak (8965ft; 8 miles round-trip), and there is a 0.3 mile wheelchair accessible loop that offers views of the lava flow.
