If you’re travelling westbound, from Kailua to Honolulu, you can make a scenic side trip along a remnant of the Old Pali Hwy, now called Nuʻuanu Pali Dr. Turn right off the modern Pali Hwy(Hwy 61)across from the state wayside turn-out. The drive runs through a cathedral of trees draped with hanging vines and philodendrons. The lush vegetation along the detour includes bamboo groves, almond trees, banyan trees with hanging aerial roots, angel’s trumpets and cup of gold, a tall climbing vine with large golden flowers. This short detour returns you to Hwy 61 heading southwest toward town, past Queen Emma’s Summer Palace.
