In the Brooklyn Navy Yard, this free museum gives an excellent overview of the key historical events that played out on this plot of land over the past 200 years. The building of naval ships, of course, features front and center, but also ties into events happening on both the local and global stages.
Relics of the past (photos, models, maps, documentary film clips) segue into the present, with displays on the Navy Yard's rebirth in the past decade. Today, you'll find design and new technology firms, artist studios and craft makers (including Kings County Distillery , which offers tastings and tours).
