Most out-of-towners who venture to the Berkshires head to the Mt Greylock State Reservation to see the state's highest peak, and thus leave October Mountain State Forest, a 16,127-acre state park and the largest tract of green space in Massachusetts, to the locals.
Hidden amid the hardwoods, Buckley Dunton Reservoir – a small body of water stocked with bass – is a great spot for canoeing . For hikers, a 9-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail pierces the heart of the forest through copses of hemlocks, spruces, birches and oaks. To get there from Lee, follow US 20 west for 3 miles and look for signs.
