Compact yet comprehensive, this small museum encompasses the tremendous variety of Hawaii's natural and cultural history. The adjacent Mission House, built by the Reverend David Lyman and his wife, Sarah, in 1839, adds a human element to the historical facts. Well-trained docents give half-hour tours of the house at 11am and 2pm.
Downstairs in the museum, geologic exhibits include fascinating examples of lava rock, minerals and shells. Upstairs, learn about Native Hawaiians, with exhibits on ancient sports, religion and the kapu (taboo) system.
