It's a narrow, winding and potholed drive to the very top of lonely Mauna Loa Rd, passing heavily forested kipuka as you come ever closer to the world's most massive active volcano. Mauna Loa has erupted more than 18 times in the past century – the last eruption, in March 1984, lasted three weeks. At the end of the road lies epic Mauna Loa Lookout (6600ft) and the start of the exceptionally challenging, multiday Mauna Loa Trail .
For the best views, wander a short way down the trail for vistas that encompass smoking Kilauea far below.
