Even though del río means 'of the river' in Spanish, the missionaries who named the area in the 17th century weren't referring to the Rio Grande but to San Felipe Springs, which gush forth at the rate of over 90 million gallons a day. Although the springs can be viewed by taking San Felipe Springs Rd off US 90 to the San Felipe Country Club, they're really not much to see. Instead, stroll along San Felipe Creek in town, especially at Moore Park, Spur 77 at S Bedell Ave. Swans, ducks and splashing kids make the scene on warm days.
