At press time this small museum was in the midst of a $6 million renovation and closed to visitors. Before closing, the museum displayed an eclectic mix of exhibits mainly dating from slavery and Reconstruction. It’s an interesting spot just by dint of its location: the Meilleur-Goldthwaite House, also known as the Tremé Villa. This pretty house was the site of the city’s first brick yard and is an exemplar of the Creole architectural style. In the back are restored shotgun houses and slave quarters.
