Look carefully and you may be able to see hikers winding their way down the canyon along the Bright Angel Trail. Maricopa, an easy walk along the paved section of the Rim Trail, makes a lovely sunrise spot.
Just east of here are the remains of the once prolific inner-canyon Orphan Mine. During its 13 years of uranium mining, beginning with the discovery of the Cold War jewel in 1951, Orphan Mine produced 4.3 million pounds of uranium and was one of the richest veins in the country.
