In the wake of the Old Man's collapse in 2003, New Hampshire struggled over the future of this historic site that once held the symbol of the state. Proposals were debated until 2007, when The Old Man of the Mountain memorial design was finally unveiled. The first phase of memorial, granite benches and stones engraved with people's memories of the Old Man, opened in 2013. Future updates will include interpretive signs detailing the Old Man's history and importance in the area.
