This park tells the story of the race riot that began on Memorial Day, May 30, 1921, when an African American man and a white woman were alone in an elevator in downtown Tulsa and the woman screamed. The how and why have never been answered, but the incident sparked three days of race riots in which 35 blocks of Tulsa's main African American neighborhood were destroyed by roving gangs. Thousands were left homeless, hundreds injured and scores killed.
