The Kakahaiʻa National Wildlife Refuge is a 44-acre refuge along the road from Kawela to Pukoʻo. It includes freshwater marshland, with a dense growth of bulrushes and an inland freshwater fishpond that has been expanded to provide a home for endangered birds, including the Hawaiian stilt and coot. Look for the nene, the goose-like Hawaiian state bird. Most of it is closed to the public but it does give a taste of the green treats to come.
