This bronze beauty dates to 1868, when it was gifted to the city of Boston by wealthy merchant Gardner Brewer. After a recent restoration, the fountain is looking lovely with its four aquatic deities from antiquity: the Roman god of water, Neptune; the Greek sea goddess, Amphitrite; and the spirit Acis and sea nymph Galatea, both from Ovid’s Metamorphoses . The design won a gold medal at the 1855 World’s Fair.
