Co-founded by painter/inventor Samuel Morse in 1825, the National Academy Museum comprises an incredible permanent collection of paintings by figures such as Will Barnet, Thomas Hart Benton and George Bellows. (This includes some highly compelling self-portraits.) It’s housed in a beaux arts structure designed by Ogden Codman Jr and featuring a marble foyer and spiral staircase.
