Take in expansive views of the canyon from the overlook, one of the highest points on the South Rim, or hike down a short way for solitude. John Hance built the park's first hotel here in 1886, followed soon after by Pete Berry's Grandview Hotel. With the arrival of the railroad in 1901, however, the tourist hub shifted to Bright Angel and the hotels here closed in 1908.
William Randolph Hearst bought Berry's land, tore down the Grandview Hotel in 1928 and planned to build a new hotel, but the park service bought him out in 1939.
