Charlotte Motor Speedway (NASCAR)
Built in 1959, this 2,000-acre motor racing complex features the Superspeedway, a 1 ½-mile quad track that hosts some of NASCAR’s biggest annual events; an approximately half-mile dirt track; and the only concrete, four-lane drag racing strip in the United States. Located 13 miles outside Charlotte in Concord, NC, the Speedway offers tours in addition to races and events.
The four biggest NASCAR events held here are the prestigious 36-race Sprint Cup Series; the Nationwide Series; the Camping World Truck Series; and the Whelen Southern Modified Tour. The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) holds its annual Mello Yello Drag Racing Series on the zMAX Dragway here, while the Dirt Track (set across Highway 29 from the main Speedway complex) hosts various Monster Truck events and the World of Outlaws, a drag race with specially outfitted winged cars.
The popular one-hour Feel the Thrill Tour (given daily at various times for $10-12 per person) introduces visitors to all three of the Speedway’s tracks, including a van ride around the 24-degree banked Superspeedway. There are also car shows held here each month, often featuring a mix of custom and collector vehicles. Visitors can stay overnight by the Speedway, which has a variety of campgrounds designed for either motorhomes or simple tents.
