Albuquerque

The city of Albuquerque is New Mexico's largest, although not its capital. It sits high in the Chihuahuan Desert in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains.
Albuquerque has the distinction of being one of the highest-elevation cities in the country – its lowest point is 4,700 feet above sea level. It's well-known for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, and despite the high altitude (and sometimes cold temperatures) the city boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each year.
There is a thriving arts scene in Albuquerque – there are hundreds of arts festivals every year – including many places to buy authentic Native American art and jewelry. One of the city's most famous foods is the green chile, found on menus throughout Albuquerque. The beauty of the natural surroundings, however, are one of the main draws of the city – with the gorgeous Sandia Mountains on Albuquerque's doorstep and recreational opportunities year-round, it can be hard to sit still. When the weather is warm, there is hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, boating, and golf to enjoy – and in the winter, those mountains offer excellent skiing.
