Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

TIME : 2016/2/19 3:58:41

Built from 1800 to 1804, this elegantly handsome Anglican cathedral was the first ever built outside the British Isles. Designed by two officers from the British army’s military engineering corps, it is modeled on London's St Martin-in-the-Fields, with pews built of oak imported from Windsor Castle’s Royal Forest. The belltower, an impressive 47m high, competes for attention with the nearby Basilique Notre-Dame. In summer, guides conduct free 10-minute cathedral tours. Out of season, e-mail [email protected] to arrange a visit.

Upon its completion, King George III sent the cathedral a treasure trove of objects, including candlesticks, chalices and silver trays. The elaborateness of the gifts heading toward the New World sent London’s chattering classes atwitter. The silver collection is now on permanent display in a new exhibit opened in 2014. The royal box for the reigning monarch or her representative is located in the upper left balcony if you are facing the altar (look for the royal coat of arms).
