Opened in May 2014, the Glacier Skywalk is a cleverly designed interpretive lookout and walkway (with a glass floor) suspended high above the Sunwapta River opposite Mt Kitchener. While it has collected a number of architectural awards since its inception, the Skywalk has baffled some visitors who have questioned whether it really adds anything to the park and its already spectacular scenery.
The only way to visit the Skywalk (which is run by Brewster) is via bus from the Columbia Icefield Centre. Casual drivers along the Icefields Pkwy are not permitted to stop at the sight, presumably to avoid overcrowding.
The experience itself takes you on a short interpretive walk along the top of the river canyon that abuts the main road and then out onto the Skywalk itself. Vertigo-sufferers hold your breath.
An audio-guide is included with the price of a ticket.
