Halifax

Halifax, the capital of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, sits on a rugged peninsula that juts into the Atlantic Ocean. Few visitors to Canada make it all the way out to this southeastern corner of the country, but those who do (many of whom are cruise passengers) are rewarded with unspoiled scenery, historic attractions and bustling waterfront activity.

As remote as it is, Halifax is a sizeable town and a major cultural center of Atlantic Canada. Historic buildings, art galleries, theaters, museums and universities comprise much of the town, but what really attracts visitors is the surrounding landscape, with tiny communities that dot the rocky coastline. Peggys Cove is one such community – a rustic fishing village 28 miles (45 km) southwest of Halifax. Peggys Cove’s classic red-and-white lighthouse is the big draw, attracting tourists and cruise ship passengers who come to snap photos of the famous landmark.

The stretch of land south of Halifax to the tip of the peninsula, along the Atlantic coast, is known as the South Shore. A popular region, the South Shore is home to cottages, a scenic coastal road and towns like Lunenburg (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The Atlantic waters around Nova Scotia team with marine life, so when you’re ready to get off the peninsula, head out on a whale-watching tour, which often includes sightings of other wildlife like birds and seals.
