Atwater Market
Open since 1933, Atwater Market is an important part of Montreal’s culinary heritage, offering a true taste of the city through artisans and purveyors selling only the freshest foods, ingredients and products. The market is spread across two floors and also includes outdoor stalls when the weather is warm, so the area may be worthy of an afternoon of exploring.
Keep an eye out for hard-to-find items, including ethnic specialties and rare spices. In addition, visitors will find nearly 10 butchers and a variety of shops to wander, most offering wine, cheese, sweets and baked goods bites to sample. The market is located right alongside historic Lachine Canal, where many Montrealers can be found enjoying post-market picnics on sunny days.
Practical Info
The market is open Monday to Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday and Friday until 8 p.m. and on Sunday until 5 p.m. Located at 138 Atwater Avenue, free parking is available. The site can be reached via Metro (go to Lionel-Groulx station on either the orange or green line), as well as by bike via the flat and accessible cycle trail along the canal.
