While the capital of Nova Scotia below has been described as a “city of the future”— thanks to its commitment to the environment and excellent infrastructure—a visit to the Citadel is a unique trip back to history. While everyone can tour the grounds and buildings—most of the current Citadel dates from the 19th century, though there has been a fort on the site since 1749—becoming a soldier for the day is a unique opportunity. If you choose to enlist, you’ll be issued an authentic redcoat uniform, attend foot drills, and learn to fire a Snider-Enfield rifle. (Younger participants skip the rifle lesson and learn to play a field drum instead.) After you “stand down,” you’ll be invited to the Sergeant’s Mess for lemonade and scones.

The grounds and washrooms are open from 9:00am until 5:00pm. Ghost Tours and other pre-arranged services are available; however, visitor experience services are limited.
