Every summer, Edmonton's Old Strathcona neighborhood hosts an Art Walk, with hundreds of artists who exhibit their work on the street. The first Art Walk in 1995 coincided with the creation of a mural by Tim Heimdal. This work began Whyte Avenue's transformation, and for the event's 20th anniversary, a new mural was commissioned to celebrate the neighborhood's artistic vibrancy. The design was created by artists Lacey Jane and Layla Folkmann and can be seen on the back of the Varscona Hotel on Whyte. While you might not find all of the Art Walk vendors the rest of the year, you can enjoy art alfresco here and at the Paint Spot on 81 Avenue, which hosts a "free wall" for street artists to practice their work. You can even pick up your own art supplies if you feel inspired.
