Arenal Hanging Bridges

While zip-line tours that take you swishing through the treetops at squeal-inducing speeds certainly have their charm, there are other ways to appreciate Costa Rica’s wondrous wilderness. Unbeknownst to most tourists, the life of the rain forest largely takes place overhead, in the thick jungle canopy of sunlight and opportunity.

Most of Costa Rica’s birds, monkeys, giant anteaters, sloths, snakes and amphibians spend the better part of their lives in the distant treetops, far from the snapping cameras of junior photographers. The key to seeing these creatures (and getting the best shots) is ascending into the trees yourself.

Hence these 16 elegantly constructed Arenal Hanging Bridges—some suspended high above gorges and others stretching far across jungle floors—that line the winding paths of this epic Costa Rican hike and stretch a total of 2.6 km (1.6 miles) across the steeply pitched landscape. Despite their height, the bridges are stable and secure. And while heavy rains can make parts of the path difficult to navigate, a hike through this forest in sunny weather is a perfect way to spend several afternoon or mid-morning hours out of doors. 
You can wander through the thick vegetation on well-marked trails on your own, or bring a guide who will point out the shy animals you probably wouldn’t otherwise notice. An early morning birding tour is the best way to expand your bird list, with some 60 species spotted regularly in this protected wilderness. Also look for families of monkeys swinging through the air and lazy sloth lounging among tree limbs. 

Practical Info

The hanging bridges are located 8 km (5 miles) east of Tabacon and 20 km (12.5 miles) from La Fortuna. Look for them just after the exit to El Castillo, on the lakefront road to Tilaran. Tours take place Monday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Entrance to the park is $24 for adults, $14 for students and free for children under 12. Walking tours and round-trip transportation from nearby hotels are both available for an additional fee. Insect repellent is a good idea.
