Facing Plaza Barrios, the most significant landmark in the city is the resting place of Archbishop Oscar A Romero. During the height of the civil war, Archbishop Romero criticized the government from the pulpit until he was assassinated while giving mass at a nearby hospital. Earthquakes and fire have shaken its foundation, but the blue-and-yellow-checked dome is an everlasting symbol of national pride.
