La Libertad
El Salvador’s most famous coastal resort might still be off-the-beaten-track for many visitors to Central America, but La Libertad’s long sandy beaches and world-class breaks have none-the-less earned it a reputation as a surf hotspot.
A short journey from the capital, the bohemian beach town attracts a steady stream of locals and backpackers, and it’s a lively place to spend the summer months, with its atmospheric boardwalk lined with reggae bars, fish markets and handicrafts stalls, and a reputation for serving up some of the country’s best seafood.
The beaches, of course, are the main attraction and there are more than a dozen to choose from up and down the coast - for surfers, the legendary Punta Roca and El Sunzal beach offer the most challenging waves, while the calmer waters of Playa San Diego are better suited to swimmers and first-time boarders and the tranquil El Tunco and El Zonte are good choices for escaping the crowds.
Practical Info
