Las Guacamayas Biological Station

This research and conservation center seeks to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Laguna del Tigre National Park in the Maya Biosphere Reserve of Petén. It is named for the scarlet macaw parrot, which is endemic to Guatemala.
Visitors can experience the diverse wildlife and Maya archeological sites through the station’s tours, or tag along with a scientist as they perform their field research of the area. Nighttime viewings of the Morelet’s crocodile are frequently led. Spider and howler monkeys, jaguars, and tapirs are also native to the national park.
Given that the station is relatively isolated, with a focus on ecotourism, it is particularly relaxing way to enjoy the natural beauty of the reserve. Las Guacamayas also accepts week long volunteers to help with trail maintenance and environmental education programs. There is a well-outfitted eco-village on site that can accommodate 30 people. 

Practical Info

Las Guacamayas Biological Station is located about three hours driving distance from Flores. Visits must be coordinated with the station in advance, so a tour is the way to go.
