The region’s indigenous people, the Seri, mainly live at Punta Chueca, a village 30km north of Bahía de Kino. You’ll need a sturdy 4WD with high clearance to make the journey along the dirt road; on arrival, prepare to be pounced upon by Seri women wanting to sell you handicrafts, including their highly regarded baskets. Isla del Tiburón, the large, mountainous, uninhabited island visible northwest of Kino Nuevo, is owned by the Seri. An intact desert ecosystem, it has good snorkeling and diving around its coast. If you’re interested in a boat trip to the island, look for Alfredo López or Ernesto Molina, guides who live in Punta Chueca and can facilitate permits or provide tours. The Centro de Estudios Culturales y Ecológicos , a field station of Prescott College, Arizona, one block off Avenida Mar de Cortez near Kino Nuevo’s northwestern end, can often advise on arrangements.
