Tamul is one of the Huasteca Potosina’s most spectacular waterfalls. Water plunges105m into the pristine Río Santa Maria (which becomes the Tampaón). It’s setting, in a canyon between two high rocky walls forest, is spectacular. To see the falls, you can drive to the top entrance though the most fun way is to paddle up river in a wooden lancha (boat), a journey of around 3.5 hours return (around M$600 per boat). You can arrange trips on arrival into Tanchachín or La Morena, two villages near the river’s car park.
Take Hwy 70 for 24km, then turn left following signs to the waterfall for another 18km to Tanchachín. If you don’t have your own transport, MS Xpediciones arranges excellent day trips from Ciudad Valles, complete with lunch at the home of a hospitable local (M$700 per person including transport, minimum two people). It also arranges rafting trips in the area.
