An estimated 70% of the world’s population of green sea turtles, along with olive ridley and leatherback turtles, lay their eggs on the long flat sands of Playa Colola (Km 160). This center monitors the beach, protects the eggs and releases hatchlings. There's rustic camping and dormitory accommodations just by the main road, and for M$40 visitors can accompany local and international volunteers on their nightly rounds (8pm to 4am).
Turtle viewing is best between September and December, when hundreds of turtles nest en masse. It's all pretty ad hoc, with staffing variable and no system of reservations or timetable.
