José María Morelos y Pavón, one of the most important heroes in Mexico’s struggle for independence, is king in Morelia – after all, the entire city is named after him. He was born in this house on the corner of Calles Corregidora and García Obeso, on September 30, 1765. Now home to a museum in his honor, the collection of old photos and documents is poignant, but not as comprehensive as the better-curated Museo Casa de Morelos.
An eternal torch burns next to the exact spot where he was born.
