Plaza del Sol

Cozumel's only city (really, a large town) is San Miguel, surrounding a natural port with easy access to the mainland, which has been used since the Mayan era at least. As in most traditional Mexican cities, civic life is centered on the zocalo here called the Plaza del Sol.

The plaza is surrounded by shops and restaurants, which tend to be a bit pricier than those farther from the city's heart. But with its breezy ocean views, a fine gazebo and watchtower, and 5-star people watching, it's well worth spending some time right here.

Practical Info

The Plaza del Sol is the cultural and economic heart of San Miguel, right on the waterfront, surrounded by a supremely strollable shopping, dining, and nightlife district. While you can rent cars, motorcycles, and scooters close by, these aren't really necessary if you're staying downtown. Taxis ply the streets, and can take you just about anywhere on the island.

Cozumel is beginning to implement a public bus system, which is currently limited to San Miguel and the immediate area. It isn't really geared to tourists, but visitors with some Spanish skills can ask about current destinations, which are likely to expand south toward the island's prime beach destinations before the guidebooks and websites catch up. 

The ferry terminal is at the end of Avenida Benito Juárez, within sight of the plaza.
