Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve
Stretching more than 120km along the Riviera Maya and encompassing a mind-boggling 1.3 million acres, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is among Mexico’s largest and most diverse protected areas. Both a UNESCO World Heritage site and an important conservation area, the vast reserve is a natural playground for visitors, with swaths of tropical jungle, mangrove forests and marshlands to explore and ample opportunities to get off-the-beaten-track.
The biggest draw to Sian Ka'an is its ecological diversity and nature enthusiasts will be in their element, spotting howler and spider monkeys swinging through the trees, crocodiles lurking in the swamps, and everything from white-nosed coati and flamingo, to ocelot, puma and jaguar roaming throughout the reserve. Other popular pastimes within the park including hiking, exploring the many Mayan archaeological sites and kayaking and tubing around the coastal wetlands, home to the world’s second largest barrier reef.
