Tuxtla Gutierrez
Despite being the state capital and commercial center of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutierrez is often relegated to a transport hub or passed over by visitors in favor of nearby San Cristóbal de las Casas, but the lively city is worth spending a day or two exploring.
Tuztla’s principal attractions are clustered around the central Plaza Civica, including the whitewashed San Marcos Cathedral, the Government Palace and Municipal Buildings, and the Regional Museum of Chiapas, home to one of the country’s top archaeological collections. Once you’ve spent the morning wandering around the colonial center and browsed the arts and crafts markets of Plaza de San Marcos, head to the Zoologico Miguel Alvarez del Toro, renowned as one of Mexico’s best zoos, or escape the city for a boat cruise through the spectacular Sumidero Canyon, before returning to the city’s Marimba gardens at dusk, where live Marimba bands perform free shows.
Practical Info
