Managua's Peace Park, with its signature lighthouse, is a lasting symbol of the challenges and hopes facing a poor nation emerging from war. The park was inaugurated in 1990 by then President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro. The concept in and of itself is quite beautiful. Within the park, they interred machines guns, pistols and even a tank in concrete – symbolically burying Nicaragua's bellicose past. Since then, the reflection pool has been drained, every brass plaque has been stolen, and even the generators and wiring for the lights have been pinched. This park is notorious for muggings – come in the middle of the day, without valuables and in a group. Try asking a guard to walk with you.
