The vast, mountainous area of Alto de Piedra contains thousands of hectares of pristine wilderness, extending from the northern edge of Santa Fé to the Caribbean Sea. Part of the northern portion of the province that remained roadless so long, a dirt road now penetrates the area. It’s wise to access this sector with an area guide.
As hikes go this now-improved road is a little dull, but it is worth doing as a loop circuit. It’s reachable by a signposted gravel road that leaves the western side of town.
