An odd thing has happened to Double Bay recently. Once the bastion of blue-rinse ladies and flashy, nouveau-riche types, it's now the clubbing locale of choice for young Sydneysiders escaping the lockouts and early closure of the city bars. It's a suburb in transition, with the reopening of the InterContinental hotel (where Michael Hutchence met his untimely demise) adding a bit of razzle-dazzle, new restaurants shaking up what was a tired eating scene, and a whole lot of new bars and clubs.
Immediately to the west, Edgecliff is a nondescript transport hub centred on New South Head Rd, sheltering the moneyed mansions of Darling Point – one of Sydney's richest nooks.
